Rihanna Has ‘Alphas’ Bothered, Chile
Another week, another Rihanna moment that has misogynists big mad.
There are diagrams, impassioned (misguided) posts and videos about Rihanna's family being featured on the cover of British Vogue. People are saying that it's disrespectful for Rihanna to appear in front of her partner and their son, because it looks like she's leading them. You know you have power when poses and positioning pisses people off.
First of all, this is Rih's cover. She's been on the cover of Vogue over 25 times in the past 10+ years. The brand loves her and obviously wanted to celebrate her evolution as a megastar musician, mogul and mama. She's having the mother of all moments, too - she just announced her second pregnancy while making history at the Super Bowl, she released solo music for the first time in years, and she's nominated for an Oscar. Let's celebrate her.
Secondly, she has a supportive partner (he loves on her whenever she comes up in interviews -- it's the most precious thing) who was completely okay with this cover. Detractors are so obsessed with the idea of women's subservience that they expect to see it displayed on world stages. They're livid when anything in culture doesn't feed their toxic ideas. It's sad, really.
I don't know if Rihanna or the photographer was looking to make a statement about mamas leading, stepping into their futures and taking care of fam and business, but they did. It's a great display of balance and the beauty of an empowered woman. If that makes you upset, you're the problem.
